Death Toll from Sumatra Earthquake Nearing 800, Thousands Remain Missing

The death toll from Wednesday’s 7.6 magnitude earthquake that devastated the Indonesian island of Sumatra has climbed to 770 people and that figure is expected to continue to rise as thousands remain missing and buried under ruble.

With hundreds of buildings lying in ruins search crews have been working around the clock digging for survivors but efforts have been slowed as communication remains difficult due to loss of electricity and a lack of sufficient equipment to handle the disaster.

In the city of Padang shopping malls, hospitals and schools were among the buildings that collapsed when the quake struck. More than 2,400 people were injured in the tremor and medical workers have been forced to operate in parking lots and tents due to the conditions.

On Thursday Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono toured some of the hardest hit areas and said “This is a natural disaster, so let us remain strong in dealing with it.”
