Spence-Chapin Services to Families and Children, a nonprofit adoption agency, was created in 1943 when two well-known nurseries serving children since the early 1900s merged into one. In 1946, Spence-Chapin began its now very popular African-American Adoption program. From its earliest days, Spence-Chapin has been dedicated to the idea that all children deserve a permanent home, and has placed nearly 17,000 children with families. Today, Spence-Chapin offers education, counseling and support to everyone involved in adoption — birth parents, adoptive parents and adoptees. The agency also works to promote an understanding of adoption through counseling and public education.
