The Oscar-winning actress was astounded by the white marble structure - the most famous mausoleum in the world and listed as one of the seven wonders of the modern world - as she took an early morning private tour across its grounds in Agra, India, last Saturday (26.09.09).
A source said: Julia was breathless, absolutely astounded by the Taj. She looked on in wonderment as her guide explained the intricate patterns and designs on the marble surface.
The Taj is a legendary symbol of love and hopefully the monument will be an inspiration to her for her latest film.
Julia, 41, is presently filming in Pataudi, outside of Delhi, for new film Eat, Pray, Love - based on a memoir by US writer Elizabeth Gilbert, who set out to eat in Italy, pray in India and love in Indonesia for her novel.
During shooting Julia is staying with Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan at his palatial home, which doubles as one of the locations used in the film.
Sharmila Tagore, Saifs mother and also a Bollywood star, said: She's staying in a part of our property.
"We've let the unit stay in a flank because she's a colleague and I know what it is like to shoot far away from home."
Julia has reportedly immersed herself in Hindu culture during her time in India, but came under fire last month when locals in one village claimed her entourage blocked them from entering a temple to celebrate a holy festival because she was filming inside.
