Rio de Janeiro has been announced as the host of the 2016 Summer Olympics, edging Madrid in a hotly contested bid that provided a number of shocks. Rio becomes the first South American country to host the Games, marking a transition in the manner in which the host city is selected.
The day started with a shocker as the city of Chicago was the first to be eliminated, stunning its American contingent which included U.S. President Barack Obama, his wife Michelle and media giant Oprah Winfrey. Tokyo was the next to fall, leaving just Madrid and Rio de Janeiro.
While Rio was a favorite heading into the day there were questions concerning safety in the city as well as venues but a passionate plea from Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva that encouraged the IOC to include South America in the Olympic dream and hinting “it was time to light the Olympic flame in a tropical country” was enough to earn the bid.
