The #4 LSU Tigers will be looking to avoid the fate that has befallen several top ranked teams over the past few weeks when they travel to Athens to take on the #18 Georgia Bulldogs in an SEC clash that could shape how the conference plays out.
LSU comes in with a 4-0 record but a less than impressive 30-26 win against Mississippi State last week has many questioning whether the Tigers anemic offense, ranked 105th in the nation, can put up the points to compete with the Bulldogs. While Georgia, coming in at 3-1, hasn’t exactly blown teams away they do have several offensive weapons that could pose problems for the Tigers.
One such weapon is sophomore A.J. Green who has been a favorite target of quarterback Joe Cox. Green is averaging 17 yards per catch and has four touchdowns on the season. That could be a problem for an LSU defensive unit that ranks 48th against the pass.
It’s not all bad for LSU though as the Georgia defense isn’t what it used to be, having given up 37 points in a narrow win over South Carolina and 41 points in a win over Arkansas, their only two SEC games to date. Most of Georgia’s defensive struggles has been in the secondary as they rank 89th in the nation in pass defense and that could open up some options for Tigers QB Jordan Jefferson and his favorite target Brandon LaFell.
Perhaps the biggest concern for LSU is concentrating on the game at hand as they have the #1 Florida Gators the following week. If LSU looks ahead and doesn’t come out strong in Athens they could be hosting Florida as a 4-1 team.
Kickoff for Saturday’s game is set for 3:30 p.m. ET.
