Mr. Magic, a New York DJ who was a key figure in helping
bring hip hop into the mainstream, has died. Magic, whose real name is John
Rivas, died Friday morning of a heart attack. No other details, including his
age, were available.
Rivas began hosting the first all hip-hop radio show
called ‘Rap Attack’ in New York in 1983. The show helped budding rappers like
Notorious B.I.G. and Nas. He also worked as a hip-hop producer and released a
series of greatest hits from Rap Attack. Rap Attack went off the air in 1989.
