Rex Reed Attacks Melissa McCarthy’s Weight, Calls Her “Hippo,” “Tractor-Sized”

In his review for “Identity Thief,” film critic Rex Reed launched a scathing attack on actress Melissa McCarthy – and most of it was not about her acting chops. Instead, Reed attacked McCarthy’s weight and appearance, calling her “cacophonous,” "tractor-sized," and a "female hippo.”

“Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids) is a gimmick comedian who has devoted her short career to being obese and obnoxious with equal success,” Reed snipes at the end of his review.

Calling the movie a "chunk of junk," Reed had no love for anything except Jason Bateman. “Poor Jason Bateman,” he laments. “How did an actor so charming, talented, attractive and versatile get stuck in so much dreck?”

McCarthy, 34, has not responded to Reed’s insults. In a previous interview with Good Housekeeping, the Mike and Molly star says she has never concerned herself with being a certain weight.  "Sometimes I wish I were just magically a size 6 and I never had to give it a single thought. But I am weirdly healthy, so I don't beat myself up about it -- it wouldn't help, and I don’t want to pass that on to my girls," she said. "You just have to say, 'It's pretty damn good. I am right here at the moment and I'm OK with it. I've got other things to think about.'"
