Alexander Semin scored the deciding goal in the shootout to lift the Washington Capitals (22-25-7) past the New York Islanders (25-21-7) 2-1. Matt Pettinger scored in the opening minutes of the first period for the Capitals but Mike Sillinger equalized for the Islanders with a shorthanded goal 27 seconds into the second period. Olaf Kolzig stopped 31 shots for Washington.
Sheldon Souray scored the game-winner two minutes into overtime to give the Montreal Canadiens (29-19-6) a 4-3 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins (26-17-9). Tomas Plekanec scored two goals and had an assist while Souray added two assists to his line. Sidney Crosby had a pair of assists for the Penguins.
