Officials in Indonesia now fear that the death toll as a result of Wednesday’s 7.6-magnitude earthquake that rocked Sumatra will number in the several thousands after declaring a number of villages have been completely wiped out.
Search crews are still digging through collapsed hotels, hospitals and schools in the city of Padang in hopes of finding survivors but with each passing hour those hopes are dimming. At least 1,000 people have been confirmed dead but with more than 3,000 people still missing that figure is expected to climb significantly.
Much of the relief effort has been concentrated on Padang but officials have said the devastation from the quake stretches across the island. The scope of that destruction remains unknown due in large part to rescue crews inaccessibility to those areas. Many villages are said to have been completely swallowed by landslides.
