Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has said at least 50 people have died as a result of mudslides in the southern areas of the country.
Heavy rains triggered the mudslides in Messina, swallowing cars and collapsing buildings while burying people under debris. Search crews have been digging through mud to find survivors but with their efforts have been slowed due to continued rain.
While there have been mass evacuations in the area relief supplies have continued to be flown in by helicopters for those still stranded.
