College Football Scores: Michigan State Spartans Upset #22 Michigan Wolverines in OT in Big Ten Showdown

Larry Caper darted through defenders, broke a tackle and went 23-yards for a touchdown to give the Michigan State Spartans (2-3) a 26-20 upset win over the #22 Michigan Wolverines (4-1) in overtime on Saturday.

Caper’s game-winning touchdown came after Michigan quarterback Tate Forcier was picked off by Chris R. Rucker on the Wolverines first possession of the extra frame.

Forcier had forced the game into overtime after leading the Wolverines on yet another last minute drive, hitting Roy Roundtree on a 9-yard touchdown pass with just two seconds left in regulation. That drive followed a 60-yard toss from Forcier to Darryl Stonum with four minutes on the clock.

While Caper’s touchdown was the story of the game it was the Spartans defense that keyed the upset, allowing just 28 rushing yards on the day. That defense allowed just six points over the first three and a half quarters as the Michigan State offense built a 20-6 advantage.

Caper gave the Spartans a 7-3 lead in the opening quarter with a one-yard run and after both teams traded field goals in the second quarter Michigan State went into halftime with a 10-6 lead. Brett Swenson pushed the advantage to 13-6 with a 24-yard field goal in the third quarter and when Glenn Winston scored on a 15-yard run early in the fourth the Spartans were up 20-6.

The win on Saturday marked the first time in 42 years that Michigan State beat Michigan in back-to-back years.
