AP Top 25 College Football Rankings Week 5: Florida, Texas, Alabama and LSU Hold Firm, Auburn Punches Way In
With the Florida Gators and Texas Longhorns enjoying a week off the AP Top 25 was already sure to keep its top two schools remaining in place but with the crazy way in which the college football season has gone the remaining ranked schools knew there was no such thing as a sure thing, something the Houston Cougars and Michigan Wolverines found out the hard way.
While the Gators and Longhorns held their spot by default the Alabama Crimson Tide and LSU Tigers had to battle to stay at #3 and #4 respectively. Alabama went on the road and knocked off a pesky Kentucky Wildcats while LSU needed a dramatic last minute touchdown to upend the Georgia Bulldogs in Athens.
The Boise State Broncos are already seeing what happens when the season stretches into the later weeks and while they earned a win on Saturday over UC Davis their #5 spot was taken by the Virginia Tech Hokies who struggle to get past the Duke Blue Devils.
Holding on to their #7 spot this week is the USC Trojans who hammered the suddenly offensive-challenged California Golden Bears. The Trojans have shaken off their early loss to Washington and appear to be positioning themselves for a BCS national championship game.
Continuing their rise in the AP Top 25 are the #8 Cincinnati Bearcats who jumped two spots and took Oklahoma’s spot this week following the Sooners loss to the Miami Hurricanes. That same Hurricanes squad bounced back from their disappointing loss to Virginia Tech a week earlier and fought their way past Oklahoma to jump up six spots to #11 this week.
While the SEC saw the Georgia Bulldogs drop from the Top 25 they placed yet another team among the elite as the Auburn Tigers vaulted up to #17 after knocking off the Tennessee Volunteers. Not to be outdone, the South Carolina Gamecocks made their way into the Top 25 as well after taking care of South Carolina State.
