While official results have yet to confirm Greece’s snap election the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (Pasok) hs already begun celebrating a victory over the ruling New Democracy party headed up by Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis.
Those celebrations were tipped off after exit polls showed the Pasok with 43.3% of the vote and the New Democracy carrying 36.2% of the vote following 8% of the votes being counted.
Those figures would give Pasok between 151 to 159 seats which would hand them a majority in the country’s 300-seat parliament.
Despite the early celebrations of Pasok members of the New Democracy have yet to concede the election, saying it was still early in the counting process. Karamanlis had called for the election two years into his four year term, looking to establish a new mandate to overcome the economic problems Greece currently faces.
