Jay Cutler was 18/28 for 141 yards and two touchdowns and added a rushing TD, Matt Forte collected 121 yards on the ground and a score on 12 carries, and Johnny Knox had a 102-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to start the third quarter and spark the Chicago Bears (3-1) to a 48-24 victory over the Detroit Lions (1-3) on Sunday.
Coming off their first win in more than a year the Lions looked ready to upset the Bears and took a quick 7-0 lead in the opening frame when Kevin Smith scored from a yard out but Chicago would answer when Jay Cutler used his legs, scrambling into the endzone from 5-yards out to tie the game at 7-7. Detroit’s offense continued to click though and Matt Stafford put the Lions back in front 14-7 when he hit Will Heller on a 14-yard touchdown pass.
Cutler responded to the Lions score early in the second quarter when he found Kellen Davis on a 2-yard TD toss and three minutes later a Cutler one-yard touchdown pass to Greg Olsen had the Bears in front 21-14. Detroit wouldn’t go away though and Kevin Smith evened the game at 21-21 with a 3-yard TD.
Johnny Knox set the tone for the second half when he took the opening kickoff 102 yards for a touchdown and the Bears claimed a 28-21 advantage. Robbie Gould would add a pair of field goals in the frame to push the cushion to 34-21 heading into the fourth.
The Lions managed to climb back to within ten following a Jason Hanson 35-yard field goal but Matt Forte put the game away For the Bears when he went 37-yards for a touchdown to make it 41-24 with 6:46 left in the game. Chicago would tack on another TD when Garrett Wolfe went 2-yards with just under two minutes left on the clock.
