Drug Rehab Must Encompass Physical Handling

The effectiveness of Narconon drug treatment centers on a process that reduces physical drug cravings.

Before Barry Smith* went into the Narconon drug and alcohol rehabilitation program his life was in complete chaos. Struggling with addiction for more than seven years, Barry had tried many types of treatment but always ended up back on drugs. He wound up looking at jail time after receiving his second driving under the influence (DUI) charge, lost his home and he was living on the streets and in various drug houses.

“I was confused and depressed,” he explains. “It was my fifth attempt at drug rehab and I wanted to go into a program that would help me to stop using drugs permanently.”

Barry enrolled in the Narconon program and one of the first steps of treatment was handling the physical aspect of his addiction. The Narconon program uses a unique therapy to reduce physical drug cravings through a dry-heat sauna. Clients undergo the sauna detoxification process that actually helps to remove drug residues from the body in order to reduce physical cravings, which many consider to be the number one reason why a person relapses. A key component of this cleansing process is also replenishing the body with nutritional supplements so that people heal faster and feel better.

“The sauna was great,” says Barry. “I felt better than I had ever felt in my life. I had no urges to use drugs anymore, more energy and finally felt normal again.”

Erica Catton, Director of Public Services at Narconon explains that recent government addiction studies point to relapse rates with drug treatment between 40 and 60% as an industry norm. Catton comments that one of the main reasons for that is that most treatment programs to not address this physical aspect of addiction.

“Many of the clients we see that come through Narconon have tried and failed at other types of treatment,” she says. “But it’s not that those programs are ineffective but that they do not address the physical aspect of addiction so clients are much more likely to relapse.”

The program also addresses the mental and emotional components of addiction by using life skills therapy to help raise the ability of the individual.

Using this proven approach to handling substance abuse, the program achieves a more than 70% success rate for permanent sobriety from addiction.   While the program is individually-based, it is considered long-term because it can easily last 3-6 months.

And as a result of this successful treatment Barry has been able to get and staff off drugs stably. “Narconon was the only thing that worked for me,” he says. “I am completely drug free and I feel great.”
