Honduras’ interim leader Roberto Micheletti has said he will be asking ministers to restore the civil liberties that were suspended two weeks ago after ousted President Manuel Zelaya secretly returned to the country.
Zelaya was removed from his office on June 28 and forced out of the country after being accused of taking steps to change the constitution so that he could stand for the election. While several countries demanded Micheletti restore the democratically elected Zelaya the country’s interim government refused and warned the ousted leader any attempt to return would result in his arrest.
After several failed attempts to return Zelaya managed to sneak back into the country two weeks ago and took refuge in the Brazilian embassy. His return sparked the interim government to issue an emergency decree that suspended several civil liberties as well as shut down to radio stations that had expressed loyalty to Zelaya.
While the decree, which was to limit freedom of movement, freedom of speech and ban gatherings of more than 20 people, was to last 45 days but Micheletti has since declared it should be lifted. In a television address Micheletti stated, “It is my decision to rescind the decree, but we'll take the decision with the council of ministers today.”
