The build-up to Monday night’s NFL showdown between the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers began when Brett Favre announced he was returning for another season and while the three-time MVP has said revenge did not factor in his decision there is little doubt that facing his former team at least twice certainly helped in deciding.
Favre has his Vikings sitting atop the NFC North at 3-0 and they’ll need a win on Monday night to keep that spot as the Chicago Bears are 3-1 and the Packers are right behind at 2-1. With all three teams legitimate Super Bowl contenders Monday night could be an early indicator as to who has the upper hand in the division.
Minnesota hasn’t asked Favre to carry the team but rather lead the team. That has consisted of a lot of handoffs to Adrian Peterson who has been the primary weapon of the Vikings offense. While Peterson is the workhorse that doesn’t mean Favre can’t conjure up some magic, just ask the San Francisco 49ers who saw their upset bid dashed in the closing seconds last week when the 39-year-old QB tossed a 32-yard touchdown pass to Greg Lewis for the dramatic win.
The Vikings have also been pleasantly surprised by the output of Percy Harvin who has become an early look for Favre on passing routes. He also has some reliable hands in Bernard Berrian and Sidney Rice and that has helped Minnesota put up the fourth most points per game in the NFL.
Green Bay just happens the to be the fifth team on that list and with Aaron Rodgers now taking the snaps for the Packers the offense appears to rely on a collective whole rather than just the quarterback. Heading into Monday night’s game Rodgers has a 97.2 passer rating, just slightly higher than Favre’s 94.5. Rodgers has yet to toss an interception and has developed into one of the most consistent passers in the NFL and he’d love nothing more than to pick up a win against the Packers to finally emerge from the Favre shadow.
While there has been much made over the Favre/Rodgers showdown the game could come down to how well the defenses play. Both the Vikings and Packers have defenses ranked in the top five against the pass but things get a bit different against the run. Minnesota maintains a top five rushing defense but the Packers drop to number 13 against the run, allowing an average of 128.7 yards per game. That could prove problematic when they have to find a way to stop Adrian Peterson who averages 119.0 yards per game, tops in the NFL.
Kickoff is set for 8:30 p.m. ET.
