Famed film director Roman Polanski has been denied bail by the Swiss Justice Ministry and still faces the possibility to being extradited to the United States where he would likely be sentenced to prison for a 1977 conviction on charges of unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl.
Prior to sentencing Polanski fled the U.S. and settled in France where he had citizenship, ensuring he would not be extradited. Despite his travels over the years Polanski remained elusive to U.S. authorities but last month he was nabbed by Swiss officials as he arrived in the country to pick up a lifetime achievement award at the Zurich Film Festival.
While his arrest drew outrage from some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry U.S. officials have continued to insist Polanski be returned to face sentencing. On Tuesday the Swiss Justice Ministry made that possibility a little stronger by calling Polanski a flight risk and denying his bail request.
