Daniel Briere and Ales Kotalik scored in the shootout to lift the Buffalo Sabres (36-15-4) past the Atlanta Thrashers (29-28-9) 4-3. Briere scored a pair of goals in regulation before scoring again in the shootout while Nathan Paetsch has two assists. Ilya Kovalchuk scored his 30th goal of the year for the Thrashers.
Curtis Joseph stopped all 28 shots he faced as the Phoenix Coyotes (25-27-2) beat the Columbus Blue Jackets (21-28-5) 3-0. Steve Reinprecht opened the scoring for the Phoenix Coyotes in the first period and Shane Doan and Mike Zigomanis added goals in the second period for the Phoenix win.
The Pittsburgh Penguins (27-17-9) scored four unanswered goals after falling behind 1-0 and beat the Nashville Predators (37-15-3) 4-1. Scott Nichol put the Predators on the board in the first but Jordan Staal answered in the second period and Evgeni Malkin found the back of the net two minutes later for the lead.
Frantisek Kaberle scored his first goal of the season and it proved to be the game winner as the Carolina Hurricanes (27-22-7) beat the Montreal Canadiens (29-20-6) 2-1. Rod Brind’Amour assisted on both goals for the Hurricanes. Can Ward had 25 saves for Carolina.
Phil Kessel scored the deciding goal in the shootout as the Boston Bruins (24-24-4) beat the Washington Capitals (22-25-8) 3-2. Marc Savard recorded a pair of assists for the Bruins while Brandon Bochenski and Patrice Bergeron scored goals in regulation. Tim Thomas stopped 32 shots in goal for Boston.
Brian Gionta scored in overtime to lift the New Jersey Devils (33-15-6) past the New York Rangers (25-24-5) 3-2. The Devils were up 2-1 heading into the third period but Jaromir Jagr evened the scoring with his 20th goal of the season. Paul Martin and Zach Parise scored goals for the Devils.
Martin St. Louis and Brad Richards scored in the shootout to lift the Tampa Bay Lightning (30-23-2) past the Los Angeles Kings (18-30-8) 3-2. Vincent Lecavalier put the Lightning in front 1-0 in the first period and Blair Jones made it 2-0 less than two minutes later but the Kings responded with two goals from Mike Weaver in the third to force extra time.
Alexander Steen scored with less than two minutes remaining in the second period to lift the Toronto Maple Leafs (27-21-6) past the St. Louis Blues (21-25-8) 2-1. Alexei Ponikarovsky put the Leafs in front with a power play goal in the first period but Ryan Johnson answered with a goal for the Blues in the second.
The Dallas Stars (32-20-2) were down 2-0 but rallied to score four unanswered goals and beat the Minnesota Wild (29-22-4) 4-2. Jussi Jokinen and Antti Miettinen each had a pair of assists for the Stars and Philippe Boucher, Mike Modano, Sergei Zubov, and Stu Barnes scored goals.
Paul Stastny scored with 37 seconds remaining in the third period to force overtime and Joe Sakic scored 25 seconds into overtime to give the Colorado Avalanche (26-23-4) a 5-4 win over the Florida Panthers (20-24-11). Sakic added a goal to his line as the Avalanch fought back from a 4-2 deficit to earn the win.
Daniel Sedin recorded a hat-trick and added a pair of assists as the Vancouver Canucks (30-20-4) beat the Edmonton Oilers (26-24-4) 5-2. Henrik Sedin had three assists for the Canucks and Markus Nasland added a goal and an assist in the win. Jan Hejda had a pair of assists for the Oilers.
Martin Havlat and Jeff Hamilton scored in the shootout to give the Chicago Blackhawks (20-26-7) a dramatic 3-2 win over the Calgary Flames (29-17-7). Havlat scored twice with less than three minutes remaining in the third to send the game into extra time. Jeff Friesen and Kristian Huselius scored for the Flames.
Travis Moen scored twice and Rob Niedermayer added a goal and an assist as the Anaheim Ducks (33-13-8) jumped to a 6-1 lead and held on to beat the San Jose Sharks (34-19-1) 7-4. The Ducks scored four goals in the second period but the Sharks tried to make things interesting by scoring three in the third. Patrick Marleau had a goal and two assists for the Sharks while Jonathan Cheechoo had a pair of goals in the loss.
