Italy’s Constitutional Court, the nation’s highest court, has overturned a law that had granted Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi immunity from prosecution while in office.
Berlusconi has been facing calls to step down from office as he has been named in a number of cases including one that accused him of corruption. Because he had been granted immunity Berlusconi was able to remove himself from those cases but Wednesday’s decision could pose new problems for the controversial leader.
Berlusconi called the ruling politically motivated and insisted he would not resign.
