French Foreign Minister Bernard Koucher has accused Guinea leader Capt. Moussa Dadis Camara of ordering the military to open fire on protesters during last week’s demonstrations, a decision that resulted in more than 150 people being killed.
Thousands of people had gathered inside a stadium in Conarky last week to protest the current state of the government. With opposition leaders in attendance calling for Camara to step down from his position military soldiers quickly moved in and began firing on the crowd.
Camara has denied any involvement in the acts, blaming out-of-control soldiers for the deadly shootings.
Koucher expressed serious doubt about that denial, saying “The least we can say is that we strongly suspect the interim president to have taken part in the decision.”
Camara seized power in a coup d’état late last year following the death of President Lansana Conté. He originally stated he would only sit as an interim leader and would not run for office in 2009 but he recently announced that presidential elections wouldn’t be held until 2010, leaving many to suspect he was working around his earlier promise.
