The Dallas Cowboys are reportedly set to announce San Diego Chargers defensive coordinator Wade Phillips as the new head coach of their storied franchise. While no contracts have been signed the formal announcement could be coming as early as Thursday.
As defensive coordinator Phillips’ unit was ranked seventh overall in the AFC. His 3-4 defense is the same that has been implemented by the Cowboys in years past.
The decision to go with a defensive minded head coach was expected after Cowboys owner Jerry Jones hired former quarterback Jason Garrett to the staff. While Garrett hasn’t assumed any defined role as of yet, he is expected to be named the offensive coordinator.
Phillips has compiled a 48-39 record as a head coach for New Orleans, Denver, Buffalo, and Atlanta. He was 0-3 in playoff games.
