America Idol contestant Bucky Covington, the eight place finisher in last year’s contest, has openly praised the highly critical judge, Simon Cowell. Covington has credited Cowell for sparking public interest in the show and in turn interest in the performers.
Covington stated “Because of him being mean, millions of people watch that show, so I say 'thank you' for being mean. You turned on a lot of people to this show, and because of that a lot of great things happened to me.”
Cowell is often depicted as the judge who crushes the spirit and dreams of wannabe pop stars. His brutal honesty and penchant for cutting to the chase has earned him admirers and enemies alike. In most cases the dirty work is left to Cowell who makes up for the more refined remarks made by fellow judges Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson.
As for Covington, he has turned his American Idol experience into an opportunity to pursue his career. He released a self-titled debut album and his first single, “A Different World” has received steady air play on country stations.
While American Idol has obviously made big names for artists like Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Clay Aiken, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino and Taylor Hicks it is often the train-wreck auditions that bring out the biggest audiences. As the "Idol" sensation has taken hold of the U.S. it has also become a staple in several other countries.
