Suicide Bomber Targets Indian Embassy in Afghanistan, at least 17 Killed

A suicide bomber detonated a car packed with explosives outside the Indian embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan on Thursday killing at least 17 people and injuring dozens more.

Taliban militants have already claimed responsibility for the attack which occurred shortly after 8:00 am local time. The powerful blast could be heard throughout the city and destroyed shops near the embassy while causing serious damage to the Indian embassy itself.

The majority of those killed in the attack were Afghan civilians who happened to be in the street near where the car was parked.

Most believe the Taliban, which has close ties to Pakistan, targeted the Indian embassy due to its close relationship with Kabul. In July 2008 a suicide bomber crashed an explosive-packed vehicle into the gates of the embassy in an attack that left more than 50 dead.
