Sunrise Senior Living, Inc. (NYSE:SRZ) is active in today’s opening trade. The stock jumped up 19.10% to $3.93 with a huge volume of 1.60 million shares after the company said it would sell 21 of its assisted living communities to an affiliate of rival Brookdale Senior Living Inc for $204 million. Sunrise, which said earlier this year that it might have to reorganize under bankruptcy protection if it could not reach agreements with lenders to restructure debt, expects to record a related charge of about $7 million in the third quarter. The company also expects to record a gain of about $50 million on the sale of real estate upon the deal closure, which is scheduled for Nov. 16.
The stock has traded within a 52-week range of $0.27 and $9.72. So far, this year the stock has jumped up over 105% .
