NHL Scores from Feb.8; Martin Brodeur, Sidney Crosby, Ray Whitney, and Marian Hossa lead their teams to wins

Ray Emery had 27 saves while Anton Volchenkov had a pair of assists as the Ottawa Senators (31-22-3) skated past the Montreal Canadiens (29-21-6) 4-1. Ottawa jumped to a 3-0 lead with goals from Chris Phillips in the first period and second period goals from Dany Heatley and Peter Schaefer.

Martin Brodeur stopped all 25 shots he faced as the New Jersey Devils (34-15-6) shut out the New York Islanders (26-22-7) 2-0. Jamie Langenbrunner put the Devils on the board in the second and Jay Pandolfo added a shorthanded goal in the third period to seal the win.

The Columbus Blue Jackets (22-28-5) scored a pair of goals in the third period to come back and beat the Calgary Flames (29-18-7) 2-1. Matthew Lombardi gave the Flames the lead with 22 seconds remaining in the second period but David Vyborny and Fredrik Modin found the back of the net in the third for the Blue Jackets.

Dainius Zubrus scored mid-way through overtime to lift the Washington Capitols (23-25-8) past the Los Angeles Kings (18-30-9) 4-3. Zubrus added two assists to his line while Boyd Gordon had a shorthanded goal and an assist as well. Anze Kopitar put the Kings in font in the first period but Washington netted three goals in the second to counter the two scored by the Kings.

Sidney Crosby scored the deciding goal in the shootout to give the Pittsburgh Penguins (28-17-9) a 5-4 win over the Philadelphia Flyers (13-33-8). Erik Christensen and Michel Ouelett had a goal and an assist for the Penguins while Ryan Whitney added a pair of assists. Simon Gagne had two goals and an assist for the Flyers.

The Carolina Hurricanes (28-22-7) overcame a 1-0 first period deficit and scored four goals in the second to beat the Boston Bruins (24-25-4) 5-2. Ray Whitney recorded a hat-trick and added an assist while Justin Williams had a goal and two assists. Whitney scored each of his goals in the deciding second period and all within 1:40 of each other.

Manny Legace and Curtis Sanford combined to save 23 shots and give the St. Louis Blues (22-25-8) a 1-0 win over the Detroit Red Wings (35-15-6). Bill Guerin provided the only goal of the game in the second period as the Blues clamped down on the Red Wings’ offensive attack.

Niklas Backstrom stopped 41 shots to give the Minnesota Wild (30-22-4) a 4-2 win over the Florida Panthers (20-25-11). Minnesota jumped to a 3-0 lead with goals from Mark Parrish, Todd White, and Pavol Demitra. Branko Radivojevic added three assists in the Minnesota win.

Steve Sullivan scored a power play goal in the second period and added an assist as the Nashville Predators (38-15-3) beat the Toronto Maple Leafs (27-22-6) 4-2. Jason Arnott added two assists for the Predators while J.P. Dumont had a power play goal in the third period to put Nashville up 3-1.

Slava Kozlov and Marian Hossa each scored a pair of goals and had two assists as the Atlanta Thrashers (30-18-9) beat the Colorado Avalanche (26-24-4) 6-3. Atlanta scored three first period goals and added another in the second to take a commanding 4-0 lead. Both Greg de Vries and Scott Mellanby had a pair of assists in the win.
