Methamphetamine Facts

Methamphetamine- one of the most addictive drugs, one leading the nation in toxicity, found in rural communities and inner cities.

Methamphetamines are synthetic amphetamines or stimulants that are produced and sold illegally in pill form, capsules, powder and chunks.  They stimulate the central nervous system by creating toxic effects on nerve terminals and are extremely addictive. Methamphetamine can be smoked, injected, snorted, and is easily dissolvable in water or alcohol where it can be swallowed. It is a white or off-white colored, sometimes odorless, and bitter-tasting crystalline powder, sometimes looking like shards of glass.

What are the facts about methamphetamine and how dangerous is it?

From its parent drug, “amphetamine,” methamphetamine developed early in this century and was originally used as nasal decongestants and bronchial inhalers. It’s chemical structure is closely related to amphetamine, however, methamphetamine has a more pronounced and dangerous affect on the central nervous system. As with amphetamine use, it causes an increase in energy, a decrease in appetite, and produces an overwhelming feeling of well being.

After the “rush,” the effects can last 6 to 8 hours. In some individuals after the initial “rush” there may result a state of high agitation that can lead to violent behavior and the inability to complete simple cycles of action

Long-term methamphetamine abuse results in many damaging effects, including addiction. Addiction is chronic and relapsing, characterized by compulsive drug-seeking and drug use. In addition to being addicted to methamphetamine, chronic methamphetamine abusers exhibit symptoms that can include violent behavior, anxiety, confusion, and insomnia. They also can display a number of psychotic features, including paranoia, auditory hallucinations, mood disturbances, and delusions (for example, the sensation of insects creeping on the skin, which is called “formication”). The paranoia can result in homicidal as well as suicidal thoughts.

High doses can elevate body temperature to dangerous, sometime lethal, levels as well as cause convulsion.

After the effects of meth wears off, it can cause severe withdrawal that is more intense and longer lasting than both speed and cocaine.  These withdrawal symptoms can include depression, anxiety, fatigue, paranoia, aggression and an intense craving for the drug.

Methamphetamines may be known as meth, crank, glass, speed, crystal, ice, batu, chalk, or zin.
