Southern Miss Golden Eagles walk-on punter Peter Wilkes died early Friday morning after being shot the previous evening while visiting his hometown of Union City, Tenn.
Wilkes, 18, had returned to his hometown as Southern Miss was on fall break and he was not part of the Golden Eagles traveling squad. Southern Miss. is scheduled to play Louisville on Saturday.
There have been no details released concerning how Wilkes was shot or the events that led to the shooting. Coach Larry Fedora noted in a statement released by the school “We are obviously shocked and devastated to hear the news about Peter’s passing. Peter was an integral part of this football program and our thoughts and prayers are with his family members during this difficult time.”
