The #1 Florida Gators (4-0, 2-0)) will be facing the #4 LSU Tigers (5-0, 3-0) in Baton Rouge on Saturday night and while questions surrounding Tim Tebow remain one thing is certain, whoever wins will be a clear favorite to reach the BCS national championship game in January.
The status of Tebow remains the biggest topic leading up to the game as the Gators quarterback continues to recover from a concussion he suffered two weeks ago against the Kentucky Wildcats. While Tebow has expressed a desire to play he is still exhibiting symptoms related to the injury and will be a game-time decision.
Florida has been an offensive machine, averaging 45.5 points per game and even if Tebow doesn’t play LSU could find themselves struggling to matchup with the Gators. That’s due in large part to the offense of the Tigers which is ranked 61st in the country, averaging 27.0 points per game. While the Tigers offense found new life against the Georgia Bulldogs last week it may be a different story on Saturday as they face the nation’s number one defense in the Gators.
Florida has allowed just 7.3 points per game and just two touchdowns all season. With no true offensive weapon the Tigers will need to find points on special teams or defense. That LSU defense remains the team’s strongest asset, allowing 14.8 points per game.
If the Gators defense does have a weakness it is against the run and that could be the only way the Tigers will be able to move the ball. Charles Scott is coming off his best game of the year after rushing for 95 yards and a pair of touchdowns against Georgia. LSU is counting on Scott to make life easier for sophomore quarterback Jordan Jefferson who is still trying to get comfortable running the offense.
It will be a different story for the Gators offense even if Tebow sits out as sophomore quarterback John Brantley will have plenty of weapons to choose from to lead the attack. Brantley has seen action this year and has tossed four touchdowns without an interception. He’ll have Jeffery Demps in the backfield to pick up yards on the ground while Riley Cooper and Aaron Hernandez are established receivers who have proven they can come down with just about anything thrown at them.
Kickoff for Saturday’s game is set for 8:00 p.m. ET.
