Pakistani Militants Attack Military Headquarters, Take at least a Dozen Hostages

Pakistani militants attacked a military headquarters in Rawalpindi, killing at least six soldiers and taking a number of security personnel hostage.

The militants, said to be tied with the Taliban, stormed the compound in the middle of the day and quickly became involved in a gun battle with soldiers. Officials are saying four of the militants were killed in the fight but as many as five remain inside a building with up to 15 hostages.

Those same officials said the gunmen approached the military compound in a van, took position and then opened fire on the soldiers. After about 45 minutes the soldiers managed to gain the upper hand but that then created the hostage situation.

It s being reported that the militants are demanding the release of some of their fighters in exchange for the hostages but Pakistani authorities are not releasing much information about the matter. The building has since been surrounded by soldiers and the area has been blocked off as helicopters hover over the compound.
