Series of Blasts Kill at least 22 in Iraqi City of Ramadi

Three bombs detonated in the Iraqi city of Ramadi on Sunday killing at least 22 people and leaving more than 60 people injured.

According to reports the first blast occurred after a car packed with explosives plowed into a wall at the city’s police headquarters. As a crowd gathered around the scene a second blast was ignited by a motorcycle bomb, killing several people who had attempted to provide relief following the initial blast.

A third explosion, reported to be another car bomb, was detonated outside the city’s main hospital.

Shortly after the blast a curfew was put in place in Ramadi, the capital of Anbar province. At one time Anbar had been the center of the Sunni insurgency but a concentrated effort from Iraqi forces and U.S. soldiers had stabilized the area. That has changed over the past several weeks as there has been an escalation in attacks on police and army checkpoints in the province.
