AP Top 25 College Football Rankings Week 6: Florida Gators Hold Firm to Top Spot, Alabama Crimson Tide Jump Past Texas Longhorns in Poll
For the first time in weeks the AP Top 25 rankings remained relatively stable as there were no giant shifts in position. The Florida Gators solidified their spot atop the rankings with an impressive road win over then #4 LSU while the SEC claimed the #2 spot this week as the Alabama Crimson Tide beat up Mississippi to jump past the Texas Longhorns in the latest poll.
Texas, despite beating knocking off Big 12 opponent Colorado, slipped to #3 this week but still control their destiny in reaching a BCS national championship game.
After leapfrogging Boise State last week for the #5 spot in the AP Top 25 the Virginia Tech Hokies inched up another spot this week after a convincing win over Boston College on Saturday. The Broncos of Bosie State also benefited from the LSU Tigers loss by reclaiming the #5 spot this week despite having a week off.
The USC Trojans also had a week off yet moved up a spot to #6 this week but they’ll have a tough game next week when they visit Notre Dame who returned to the AP Top 25 this week despite not playing.
In a strange turn of events TCU knocked off Air Force on Saturday to remain undefeated yet still dropped two spots in the AP Top 25 to settle at #12 this week. Cincinnati remained at #8 this week with their perfect 5-0 record while Iowa stayed unblemished and moved up to #11 in the rankings.
Kansas continued their impressive start to the season yet slipped from #16 to #17 this week while South Florida kept their perfect record and moved up two spots to #23.
While the week remained relatively calm it could all be shaken up next week as several games on the slate are sure to muddy the waters. Cincinnati and South Florida square off on Thursday, Oklahoma and Texas renew their Red River Rivalry, USC travels to face Notre Dame, Penn State takes on Minnesota, Virginia Tech has to travel to face Georgia Tech, and South Carolina takes on Alabama
