A Sudanese court has upheld the death sentence hand down to four Islamists who had been charged in the shooting death of U.S. envoy John Granville and his driver Abdelrahman Abbas Rahama on January 1, 2008.
The death sentence was upheld in accordance with Sudan’s Islamic law which allows the family of a murder victim to request the death penalty for those convicted in the murder. The family could also forgive those convicted or ask for compensation. According to reports Granville’s mother had asked the court to uphold the death sentence.
While the four men convicted of the murders confessed they have since retracted those statements, saying their confessions were made after being tortured.
Granville, 33, and Rahama were murdered in Khartoum as they returned from a New Year’s Eve party.
