Russia has apparently backed away from their previous position regarding future sanctions against Iran as Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that Moscow was in favor of more negotiations regarding their controversial nuclear program.
In speaking with Clinton on Tuesday Lavrov called further sanctions against Iran counter-productive and said greater efforts had to be made to settle the matter through negotiations.
Moscow’s stance wasn’t exactly what Clinton was looking for as she made it known she wanted Russia’s support in taking a hard line stance against Iran. While Clinton told a press conference following the meeting that Russia had “been extremely co-operative in the work that we have done together” that didn’t appear genuine.
Iran’s nuclear program has been a concern in Washington for some time and they have accused Tehran of attempting to develop nuclear weapons. Those accusations have been denied by Iran which has insisted their nuclear program is for peaceful purposes. Moscow now appears to be in favor of giving Iran more time to prove their assertion.
Just last month Russian President Dmitry Medvedev seemingly conceded to U.S. President Barack Obama that further sanctions against Iran would be inevitable. That came as it was made known Iran had been developing a second uranium enrichment facility, a project that had not been disclosed to the United Nations and its nuclear watchdog group.
