Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai conceded that there were irregularities in the country’s recent elections and that there had been fraud to a certain degree but insisted that the process was “was good and fair and worthy of praise.”
Karzai has been forced to defend the results of the election as the UN-backed Electoral Complaints Commission investigates the claims of fraud. While Karzai is in position to remain in office the findings of the investigation could actually force the election into a second round, something Karzai is looking to avoid.
The Afghan leader has called into question the legitimacy of the UN-backed panel, pointing to the recent resignation of an Afghan member as reason for doubt in its findings. In an interview with ABC’s Good Morning America Karzai stated “I am not going to say the Electoral Complaints Commission is illegitimate,” and then followed by saying “That resignation has cast serious doubt on the functioning of the commission.”
While Karzai has said the resignation was evidence of problems within the panel his closest rival Abdullah Abdullah has claimed that the resignation was staged. According to Abdullah’s deputy campaign manager Saleh Mohammad Registani the resignation “has a direct connection to Karzai. It was Karzai's idea.” Registani insisted the move was made in an attempt to “bring the work of the ECC into question.”
Karzai currently holds about 55% of the vote while Abdullah has 28%, the election would head into a second round if neither was able to secure at least 50%.
