On a night where Rock, R&B, and Alternative music traditionally take center stage, Sunday’s 49th annual Grammy Awards went country. In an unexpected turn of events country music’s Dixie Chicks grabbed the gold from the tradition music scene and got an assist from newcomer and former “American Idol” Carrie Underwood.
The Dixie Chicks nabbed Grammys for Record of the Year, Album of the Year, and Song of the Year to sweep the big three and they added a pair of Grammy Awards in their more specific country categories to enjoy a night that produced a handful of statues.
Not to be overshadowed, the former American Idol Carrie Underwood stood her ground and won Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and won Best Female Country Vocal Performance for “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” a song that was named Best Country Song.
While the night carried a country tune, there were several other performers that enjoyed multiple Grammys.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers continued their dominance in the rock genre with Grammys for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group, Best Rock Song, and Best Rock Album. The quartet also put on a great performance for the crowd.
Best Pop Vocal Album went to John Mayer. The singer linked to Jessica Simpson also picked up a Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
Mary J. Blige missed out on Record and Song of the Year honors in the General Field but won for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, Best R&B Album, and won a Grammy for Best R&B Song as well.
