Ford has issued their biggest recall ever by expanding a
previous recall of vehicles over a cruise control defect. Ford expanded the
recall by 4.5 million vehicles, raising the total number to 14 million.
The cruise control switch poses a fire hazard, according
to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The affected vehicles
include trucks, vans and commercial vehicle models from 1992 to 2003.
The recalled vehicles:
Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer 1995-2002
Windstar 1995-2003
Ranger 1995-1997, 2001-2003
Excursion with diesel engine 2000-2003
Econoline van 1992-2003
F35 motor home 1993-1997
F-Series Super Duty with diesel engine 1999-2003
The cruise control switch can overheat, possibly starting
a fire. The switch overheating can occur even when the engine is shut off. Ford owners are being instructed not to park
any recalled vehicles inside garages or near homes until the switch is fixed. Warning
signs for an overheated switch include malfunctioning cruise control and brakes,
unusual activation of brake lights and difficulty switching the vehicle out of
park.
