One of the first rules of country music is don’t stray too far from your roots, it’s important to remember who you are and where you came from. It was a lesson that Carrie Underwood had no problem remembering on Sunday night as she collected Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Best Female Country Vocal Performance.
Underwood, the American Idol winner from season four, quickly thanked the reality music show along with the shows creator Simon Fuller for giving her the opportunity to succeed saying, "I owe everything to 'American Idol'”
Underwood now joins American Idol season one winner Kelly Clarkson as artists who have turned their American Idol experience into Grammys. While Underwood and Clarkson were able to cash in at the Grammys, Fantasia Barrino earned four Grammy nominations after winning season three of American Idol and Ruben Studdard, season two champ on American Idol, earned a Grammy nomination in 2004.
The 24-year-old Underwood not only picked up a pair of Grammys, she also earned a Grammy for the songwriters of her smash hit “Jesus, Take the Wheel.”
In 2006 the Oklahoma native won a pair of CMT Awards for Female Video of the Year and Breakthrough Video of the Year, while she won another two awards at the Academy of Country Music Awards as Top New Female Vocalist of the Year and Single Record of the Year. She also collected five Billboard Music Awards.
