The fragile unity government in Zimbabwe could be facing yet another test of its strength following news that MP Roy Bennett has been ordered back to jail where he is to remain until his trial on terrorism charges begins on October 19.
Bennett was originally arrested in February, the same day that ministers were sworn in to the new coalition government partnering President Robert Mugabe and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai. Mugabe’s ZANU-PF party has accused Bennett of plotting to kill the president, a charge that Tsvangirai’s MDC party have called untrue.
In March Bennett was released from jail, to await trial but on Wednesday the justice system ordered him held until his court date. Mugabe’s ZANU-PF party has a firm hold on the judicial system, a point of contention among MDC supporters.
Bennett, who has denied any wrongdoing, is now facing charges that include terrorism, insurgency, sabotage and banditry and if convicted he could receive a life sentence.
