A Practical Guide to Gravity Sedimentation

A Practical Guide to Gravity Sedimentation is one of ten short courses that the American Filtration and Separation Society (AFS) will be offering during its 20th Annual Conference being held March 26-30, 2007 in Orlando, Florida.

A Practical Guide to Gravity Sedimentation is a four hour course that is being held 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm on March 26th. Attendees are awarded a certificate with .4 CEUs.

Harley Schreiber and Charles(Chuck) Eddy Silverblatt are the instructors for the course.

Harley Schreiber graduated from the University of Alberta in 1986 with a B. Sc. degree in Chemical Engineering. In addition to his plant experience, he has worked for 15 years with WesTech and EIMCO, two leading equipment manufacturers in sedimentation and filtration.

Charles (Chuck) Eddy Silverblatt graduated in 1952 from Northwestern University with a BS and MS in Chemical Engineering. Throughout his entire career he actively participated in, and managed, the technical development of equipment in the fields of filtration and sedimentation. He was the co-author of the sedimentation and filtration sections of the Perry’s Chemical Engineering Handbook.

The training course will cover:

Comparison of Clarifiers and Thickeners

Flocculation and Coagulation

Thickener – size, feed dilution, design, torque loading and component design

Clarification – sizing and operating parameters

Thickener and clarifier general arrangements

Drives

Paste Thickening Basics

Ultra-High Rate Thickeners

Pinned Bed clarifiers

Sedimentation Testing

Solids Contact clarifier

Thickener and Clarifier Process Control

Useful sedimentation calculations

Following the AFS short courses is the AFS 20th Annual Conference that consists of dozens of technical presentations on filtration and separation. The conference runs March 27-29. The event is co-located with the WQA Aquatech 2007 exhibit that runs March 28-30.
