An explosion Tuesday at a military ammunition storage facility in western Nevada left seven North Carolina-based Marines dead. At least eight others were wounded and are being treated at Renown Regional Medical Center. Five are in fair condition and the other three are in serious condition.
The explosion occurred at Hawthorne Army Deport during a live-fire training exercise involving members of the 2nd Marine Division of Camp LeJeune. NBC News reports a 60-millimeter mortar exploded before the Marines fired it. The cause of the accident is unclear and is under investigation.
"We don't know exactly what happened, but it was a violent explosion, we know that," says Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. "Our thoughts are with those who were injured and of course the families of those who lost loved ones."
Maj. Gen. Raymond C. Fox, commander of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp LeJeune, released a statement saying, “We send our prayers and condolences to the families of Marines involved in this tragic incident. We remain focused on ensuring that they are supported through this difficult time. We mourn their loss, and it is with heavy hearts we remember their courage and sacrifice.”
The Hawthorne Army Depot, located about 140 miles southeast of Reno, was established in 1930. It stores, produces and exposes of ammunition. Training facilities are also located on the 147,000 acre spread.
