Political Crisis in Honduras Nears End as Deal Reportedly Reached

While few details have been released, the political crisis that has gripped Honduras for more than three months could be coming to an end after negotiators representing exiled President Manuel Zelaya and interim President Roberto Micheletti have apparently reached an agreement.

Zelaya was forcibly removed from office on June 28 after opposition alleged the leader had been taking illegal steps to change the country’s constitution. That opposition claimed Zelaya was attempting to rewrite the constitution so that he could stand for re-election in November. Zelaya’s current term ends in January and according to the country’s constitution he is barred from seeking another term.

Despite international pressure to restore Zelaya to office the interim government of Honduras has refused and had threatened to arrest the ousted leader if he returned to the country. Zelaya managed to sneak back into the country in September and took refuge in the Brazilian embassy where he remains today.

Since his return the interim government has taken part in negotiations to end the current political crisis but have shown no sign of allowing him to be reinstated before the November 29 elections.

That may have changed on Wednesday after the two sides reportedly reached a deal. According to Zelaya’s lead negotiator, Victor Meza, the two sides had “agreed on one unified text that will be discussed and analyzed by President Zelaya and Mr Micheletti.”

Zelaya has already set a deadline of Thursday for an agreement to be reached and while a deal has reportedly been reached that could quickly fall apart over the reinstatement matter, something Zelaya has demanded.
