CNC 5-Axis Machining: Solid Concepts Moves Into A New Dimension

Solid Concepts recently obtained a 5-axis CNC machining center for its Poway, CA manufacturing facility. 5-axis CNC machining has brought together the best of Solid Concepts’ engineering minds with advanced machining technology. The clash has been rewarding for Solid Concepts’ customers.

“With this complex, high-end state-side 5-axis machine that cuts three times faster than the 3 axis, and our AS9100 and IS9001 certifications, we can program the machine, cut the part, and put it straight onto a device,” boasted Solid Concepts Vice President of Manufacturing Jeff Lemker. "The 5-axis," explained Lemker," has the ability to machine inserts at tough to reach angles, making it possible to 5-axis CNC a piece and directly attach it to a product. Solid Concepts is able to machine carbonate parts, vapor polish them, and deliver in sometimes as little as four days for projects ranging from aerospace to MRI coils."

Of course, “to make is one thing, to measure another.” But with the Quality department backing CNC and all other technologies at Solid Concepts, measuring is no problem. In fact, Solid Concepts relies on state of the art CMM (Coordinate-Measuring Machine) equipment. The CMM can measure small accuracies, down to 0.000080”, ensuring extremely accurate machined parts.
The 5-axis CNC machine build envelope of 64” x 32” x 30” has been a hot commodity for creating huge components for aerospace vehicles.

“We’ve also seen more orders coming in for thread milling, something we do really well and is perfect for this process,” explained Lemker.
