Zimbabwe’s Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai has suspended a scheduled cabinet meeting and cancelled all of his appointments following the imprisonment of Roy Bennett, a top aide on his staff.
Tsvangirai has also refused to work from his office, saying he would not return until the matter concerning Bennett was settled. Bennett was jailed on Wednesday on charges of terrorism, insurgency, sabotage and banditry. According to the prosecution, Bennett had been plotting to assassinate President Robert Mugabe, an accusation that the senator has denied.
The trial is scheduled to begin on October 19 and if convicted Bennett could face life in prison. He had been arrested in February but was released on bail in March only to have that bail revoked on Wednesday.
