After collecting five Grammy Awards on Sunday night the controversial country group, Dixie Chicks, have seemingly been vindicated for their past transgressions. Of course, those “transgressions” are debatable but nonetheless the defiant trio remained steadfast in their beliefs and it paid off in a big way.
It has been nearly four years since lead singer Natalie Maines announced “We’re ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas.” Shortly after taking that stance country music turned their back on the women and their album and ticket sales took a major hit.
Yet the Dixie Chicks remained defiant and never caved in to demands for an apology. While county music shunned the group and several radio stations refused to play their music they never backed down and in some ways epitomized the nature of what country music represents.
Remaining true to their convictions, the Dixie Chicks braved the storm of public discord and when the final Grammy Award was handed out on Sunday night they stood above all others in the statue haul. Not only did they win Grammy Awards for Best Country Album and Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group, they grabbed Grammy Awards for Album of the Year, Record of the Year and Song of the Year, an accomplishment last achieved by Eric Clapton in 1993.
While their runaway hit single “Not Ready to Make Nice” clearly indicates that the women aren’t ready to jump back in to the arms of the country music establishment, at least they know their resolve has gained them fans in other genres.
