U.S. President Barack Obama Pledges Continued Support for New Orleans Development

U.S. President Barack Obama made a brief visit to New Orleans on Thursday, pledging to residents that his administration would continue to support the city and its efforts to rebuild following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina four years ago.

Obama addressed a large crowd at the University of New Orleans and took the opportunity to take jabs at former President George Bush and his administration’s failure to react to the natural disaster. The president accused Bush of standing idle “while a major city drowns,” something he called unacceptable and vowed not to replicate.

In making that promise Obama stated, “We will not forget about New Orleans. We are going to keep on working. We will not forget about the Gulf Coast.” He told resident “Together we will rebuild this region and we will build it stronger than before.”

While several rebuilding projects have begun in New Orleans many areas of the city remain vacant with homes still boarded up and stores and schools still closed.
