Allen Iverson has joined the lengthy list of Western Conference All-Stars who will be watching the Feb. 18 game rather than participating in it. Iverson’s decision to sit out the NBA All-Star Game put David Stern in an all too familiar position. Stern will now look for a replacement for the Denver Nuggets star guard.
The Western Conference squad had all ready suffered a setback when Steve Nash was forced to step aside due to a shoulder injury, the Iverson injury now leaves them without the services of arguably the two best ball handlers in the NBA.
In a statement released by the Denver Nuggets, Iverson said “I was really looking forward to representing the Nuggets in my first All-Star Game with the West. However, I need to make sure my ankle is 100 percent for the stretch run.”
Four players on the Western Conference All-Star team will miss the Las Vegas game. Yao Ming was voted in as a starter but was already nursing an injury. Carlos Boozer had been selected as a reserve but he too is injured. Steve Nash announced that he would not be playing in the game on Monday night and now Iverson.
David Stern is expected to announce replacements for Nash and Iverson shortly. Among those to be considered are Utah’s Deron Williams and Mehmet Okur, Portland’s Zach Robinson, and Seattle’s Ray Allen.
