Zimbabwe PM Morgan Tsvangirai Pulls MDC from Unity Government, Calls Zanu-PF “Unreliable”

Zimbabwe Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai has pulled his MDC party out of cabinet and council of ministers meetings in the country’s unity government following the recent jailing of his senior aide Roy Bennett.

Tsvangirai expressed outrage over the imprisonment of Bennett and said it was further evidence that President Robert Mugabe and his Zanu-PF party were “unreliable” partners in leading the country. Bennett was arrested in February on several charges including plotting to kill Mugabe.

Bennett was released on bail in March but earlier this week he was returned to prison where he was to remain until his court date. The ministerial nominee has denied all the charges and called the accusations baseless.

On Friday Tsvangirai said the jailing “brought home the reality that as a movement we have an unreliable and unrepentant partner in the transitional government.”

While Tsvangirai did not go all the way in saying the MDC would no longer be a part of the unity government he did say that differences with the Zanu-PF had to be addressed before things could move forward. He was quoted as saying, “Until confidence has been restored, we can't continue to pretend that everything is well.”

Tsvangirai and Mugabe agreed to a unity government earlier this year after a bitter presidential election that divided the country. Tsvangirai pulled out of that election just days before the vote after claiming Mugabe and his party had been responsible for a wave of violence against MDC supporters.
