With the first week of BCS rankings due on Sunday the college football action on Saturday could go a long way in deciding who plays for the national championship and the Big Ten has a pair of teams who appear to be positioning themselves for the title game. Both the Iowa Hawkeyes and Ohio State Buckeyes are in favorable positions and if they continue to win their Nov. 14 showdown could be for more than just a Big Ten championship.
Ohio State (5-1, 3-0) should have no trouble on Saturday as they travel to face the Purdue Boilermakers (1-5, 0-2). The Buckeyes are coming off an impressive 18-point win over Wisconsin while Purdue was handed a 35-20 beating by Minnesota last week, Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m. ET.
Kicking off at the same time will be the Hawkeyes (6-0, 2-0) as they hit the road to take on the Wisconsin Badgers (5-1, 2-1). Iowa won a thriller over Michigan last week, 30-28, while Wisconsin was handed their first loss of the year and would love to bounce back and knock the Hawkeyes from the ranks of the unbeaten.
The Michigan State Spartans (3-3, 2-1) and Northwestern Wildcats (4-2, 1-1) will also kickoff at noon. The Spartans are coming off a conference win over Illinois while the wildcats went out of conference and edged Miami (OH).
No team has been longing for home more than Michigan (4-2, 1-2), and the Wolverines should return to their winning ways on Saturday when they host the Delaware State Hornets (1-3). Michigan lost a heartbreaker last week to Iowa and the week before fell to Michigan State in OT, both losses on the road. Now they return home where they haven’t lost this year and take on a weak Hornets squad that fell 9-7 to Bethune-Cookman. Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m. ET.
Perhaps the most compelling game of the week may be the #14 Penn State Nittany Lions (5-1, 1-1) hosting the Minnesota Gophers (4-2, 2-1). Penn State is coming off a blowout over Eastern Illinois while Minnesota picked up a conference win over Purdue. The Nittany Lions are still hoping to work their way into the national title picture but the Gophers could give them a real test on Saturday, kickoff set for 3:30 p.m. ET.
In a showdown of Big Ten bottom-feeders the Indiana Hoosiers (3-3, 0-2) will host the Illinois Fighting Illini (1-4, 0-3). Indiana opened the season with three wins but has fallen apart over the past three games including an embarrassing 47-7 loss to Virginia last week. Illinois has fallen on hard times as well having lost three straight. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. ET.
