The San Jose Sharks (36-19-1) built a 6-2 lead in the second period and held on to beat the St. Louis Blues (22-26-9) 6-5. Jonathan Cheechoo had a goal and three assists while Joe Thornton finished with the same scoring line. Patrick Marleau and Mike Grier each had a goal and an assist in the Sharks win.
Vincent Lecavalier scored a pair of goals and added an assist while Martin St. Louis had a goal and two assists as the Tampa Bay Lightning (32-24-2) beat the Phoenix Coyotes (25-30-2) 5-3. Derek Morris tied the score at 3-3 with less than two minutes remaining in the second period but Tampa added two goals in the third to get the win.
Cam Ward had 21 saves as the Carolina Hurricanes (29-23-7) beat the Los Angeles Kings (19-31-7) 2-1. Dave Tanabe had two assists in the win and Ray Whitney and Scott Walker each had a goal for Carolina. Walker scored the go-ahead goal in the second after Alexander Frolov tied the score at 1-1.
Tim Thomas stopped all 32 shots he faced as the Boston (26-25-4) beat the Edmonton Oilers (28-25-4) 3-0. Marco Sturm scored a pair of goals for the Bruins and Brandon Bochenski added the other in the shutout win. Bochenski assisted on both of Sturm’s goals as well. The Bruins goals came on two power plays and an empty netter.
The New York Islanders (27-22-8) overcame a 1-0 first period deficit to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs (27-22-8) 3-2 in a shootout. Pavel Kubina gave the Maple Leafs a 1-0 lead but the Islanders answered in the second with goals from Trent Hunter and Miroslav Satan to take the lead. Toronto tied the score 2-2 with a goal from Bates Battaglia but Viktor Kozlov and Frans Nielsen scored in the shootout to give the Islanders the win.
Ed Belfour stopped all 29 shots he faced to record his first shutout in nearly three years as the Florida Panthers (22-25-11) beat the Montreal Canadiens (29-23-6) 1-0. Jay Bouweester scored the only goal of the game late in the second period to give the Florida Panthers the win. Cristobal Huet stopped 24 shots for the Canadiens.
Peter Budaj denied all 39 shots on goal as the Colorado Avalanche (27-25-4) shutout the Anaheim Ducks (33-16-8) 2-0. Milan Hejduk scored a power play goal in the first period and added an assist on a goal from Paul Stastny in the win. Jean-Sebastien Giguere stopped 27 shots for the Ducks.
The Calgary Flames (30-19-8) scored three power play goals in the opening period and went on to beat the Atlanta Thrashers (30-21-9) 4-1. Daymond Langkow had two first period goals and Jarome Iginla had a goal and two assists in the win. Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 21 shots for the Flames and Craig Conroy had two assists.
